Government ‘reviewing’ ICT policy

Kathmandu, February 12:

Minister of State for Environment, Science and Technology Man Bahadur Biswokarma today inaugurated a workshop on “e-Governence in Developing Countries” and the Fourth UNeGov Network School being organised jointly by the United Nations University’s International Institute for Software Technology, Macao, and the National Information Technology Centre (NITC), Nepal.

Biswokarma said the government was facilitating the development of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) and is revising the ICT policy, which will come into action very soon.

“The workshop will be a good platform to identify challenges and future strategies for the implementation of e-governance in Nepal,” he said.

An Information Technology Park is already in operation in Banepa, he said, expressing hope that it would attract foreign investment in the ICT sector.

The workshop and three-day network school aim to inform 100 participants from the government, non-government and international non-government organisations about the e-governace agenda in the context of Nepal and techniques of strategic planning to develop organisational and technical structures for e-governance in Nepal.

Ranjan Baral, an engineer at the NITC, said the government, with cooperation from the Korean government, has prepared an e-governance master plan consulting report that has analysed the current state of e-governance in Nepal.
