Govt decision not enough for local polls, comments CEC Yadav
KATHMANDU: Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav said the government decision to request the Election Commission to prepare for local polls was not enough.
Speaking with journalists at the Reporters' Club in the Capital today, the chief of the constitutional body said the decision would not completely ensure the local polls on time, though it was positive in essence.
He argued that the government should have announced the exact poll dates. However, the Commission was confident that the dates would be announced very soon, he shared.
Despite the insufficiency, the Commission would expedite preparations for the elections as per the government request, he maintained.
The Cabinet meeting on Thursday had decided to hold the polls by May 24 and officially write to the Commission to begin preparations for the same.

Meanwhile, Yadav also urged the government and political parties to finalise other laws and decisions, including the announcement of the date, so as to hold the polls on time.
He also said an understanding among political parties was also a must to hold the local elections peacefully.
Yadav also demanded that the government immediately approve and make public the report of the Locals Bodies Restructuring Commission so as to let the election body carry out logistic and technical preparations at all local levels.
