KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 11

The government has decided to discontinue the use of blue number plates for vehicles used by honorary consuls representing foreign governments in Nepal.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the move follows international law on honorary consulates, the principle of reciprocity, and existing regulations under the Honorary Consul Regulation, 2039.

Out of 67 consulates general in Nepal, 50 had been using such number plates. The ministry said the decision was also prompted by complaints about misuse of vehicles carrying blue plates.

The vehicles will now be registered as private, and the ministry will coordinate with relevant authorities for enforcement. However, other rights and privileges of honorary consuls will remain unaffected, the MoFA said.
