Body stresses constitutional mandate, cites Supreme Court ruling

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 3

The Language Commission has called on the government to ensure that vehicle number plates are embossed in Nepali, citing the constitutional mandate and a Supreme Court ruling.

The Commission pointed to Article 7(1) of the Constitution, which designates Nepali, written in Devanagari script, as the official language for government functions. It criticized the latest vehicle number plate provision that allows English only.

Citing a Supreme Court decision of June 23, 2024, the Commission noted that embossed number plates must use Nepali and not any language or script unrecognized by the Constitution. It urged all three tiers of government to comply with this directive.

"Recognizing our constitutional responsibility, we are once again drawing the government's attention to the need for Devanagari script on vehicle number plates," said Commission Chairperson Dr. Gopal Thakur.
