GPK to leave for Singapore
KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala, who has been receiving medical care at Shahid Gangalal Heart Centre for the last four days, will be taken to Singapore for further treatment tomorrow.
Attending doctors said the Singapore trip was set to make further investigation into his health condition, which has improved and is stable now.
An air ambulance has been arranged for Koirala’s trip, in view of his fragile health. Normal four-hour jet trip would be difficult for the octogenarian suffering from lung infection and asthma coupled with chronic pneumonia.
Koirala will be taken to Tribhuvan International Airport directly from the hospital in time for his 8 o’clock flight in the morning.
“I will make an attempt to solve the problems facing the country after returning from Singapore,” Koirala said briefly at the hospital today.
“I have talked to Maoist Chairman Prachanda several times regarding the formation of a high-level political mechanism. It will translate into reality after once I’m back,” he added. “My health is now good. A middle path would have been found had I not fallen ill.”
Koirala asked the agitating main opposition party, Unified CPN-Maoist, to withdraw its protests
and come on the way of consensus and cooperation. “The agitation will only complicate the peace process,” he said.
Koirala was admitted to the Centre on Monday morning when he complained of breathing difficulty and could not be administered oxygen at home. His personal doctors Arjun Karki and Jagadish Agrawal had suggested taking him
to Singapore for further treatment. The trip scheduled for Monday was
cancelled when his condition turned ‘unstable’ the same morning.
Koirala’s daughter, Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala, and security guard Mahendra Marasini will accompany the ailing leader. His cousin Shekher Koirala and personal secretary Shekhar Thapa have already left for Singapore.
