High dengue prevalence in cities

Kathmandu, August 18:

Prevalence of dengue has been increasing in the country, heightening concerns about the disease among health officials and public alike.

According to doctors, female mosquito Aedes Aegypti causes dengue haemorrhagic fever and transmits dengue virus.

Unlike in the past, Aedes Aegypti is found in urban areas, said Dr Bindeshwar Prasad Yadav, an official at the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD), citing a study carried out in six towns. Dengue surfaced for the first time in the country three years ago.

According to a sample survey conducted in Dhangadhi, out of 200 houses, 106 houses were found positive for larvae and pupa of Aedes Aegypti.

According to doctors, viral fever is the most common manifestation of dengue, which could lead to haemorrhagic fever with mucosal bleeding, gastro-intestinal bleeding and profound shock.
