Hunt for AG ends at Prof Dr Karki

KATHMANDU: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav today appointed Prof Dr Bharat Bahadur Karki as the Attorney General of Nepal.

According to the President’s Office, the President appointed him as per Article 134(1) of the Interim Constitution of Nepal on the recommendation of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. The AG would remain in the post as long as the PM wants him, according to the constitution.

After being appointed as the government’s chief legal advisor, Dr Karki expressed his commitment to uphold the rule of law and protect human rights. “Though this post is not stable, I am committed to perform my duty as per the constitution,” Dr Karki told The Himalayan Times today. Dr Karki also said he would work to honestly implement the spirit of the constitution to maintain law and order situation in the country in coordination with the judiciary and the National Human Rights Commission.

Born in Khotang district in 1950, Dr Karki worked as the Dean of Law Faculty under the Tribhuvan University and also completed his responsibilities as the chief of the Law Faculty. He has been teaching law from the last three decades. Dr Karki did his LLM from Delhi University in 1979. He was conferred the PhD degree by the same university in 1984. “Dr Karki is a renowned professor of business law and is a highly-rated academician. This is an honour to him,” Tika Ram Bhattarai, chairman of Constitutional Lawyers’ Forum, said.
