Police promotions
KATHMANDU: Home Ministry on Tuesday promoted 123 police officers. According to a source at the Home Ministry, three superintendents of police were promoted to the post of senior superintendent of police, eight deputy superintendents of police were promoted to the post of SP and 21 inspectors were promoted to the post of DSP. The Home Hinistry also promoted 91 sub-inspectors to the post of inspector. Among those promoted from SP to SSP are Indralal Prajapati, Chhetrapati Shrestha and Deepak Ranjit, the Home Ministry source added. — HNS
Tharus observe Maghi
KATHMANDU: Senior leader of the Nepali Congress, Sher Bahadur Deuba, said the Tharu community, which is rich in culture, is one of the oldest communities in Nepal. Inaugurating the Maghi festival of the Tharu community at Rastriya Sabha Griha, Deuba said different ethnic groups and languages were the property of the nation and they should be provided with their rights and employment. Deuba said the Maoist should understand the fact that democracy was restored in Nepal when the Nepal Army did not support the king. — RSS
US envoy meets CEC
KATHMANDU: US ambassador to Nepal Nancy J Powell met Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokhrel at the latter’s office on Tuesday. On the occasion, Pokhrel briefed the US envoy on preparations for the constituent assembly polls and the US envoy assured the Election Commission of continued US government’s support for the polls. — RSS
Tobacco-free Nepal
KATHMANDU: The Nepal Cancer Relief Society has announced to make Nepal a tobacco-free nation by 2020. The declaration was made by the Society’s Central Assembly that passed a proposal on it. The NCRS expressed its commitment to work towards realising the proposal by working in coordination with the government, political parties, civil society, consumers’ association, journalists’ associations and trade association, among others, for the effective enforcement of the United Nations Tobacco Control Convention. — RSS
Yoga Day observed
KATHMANDU: A rally was taken out on Tuesday to observe the 29th World Yoga Day. Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Poudel inaugurated the rally to mark the day. The rally, organised jointly by 52 yoga organisations, marched through Bhadrakali, Tripureshor, Thapathali and converged into a mass meeting at Maitighar Mandala. Addressing the mass gathering, Poudel stressed the need of yoga training for maintaining good health, peace, love and unity among the people of the world. He also expressed happiness that Nepal initiated celebration of World Yoga Day in 1980. “Nepal can also lead in the field of spirituality,” he said, adding that the day should be promoted as a national festival. Dr Hari Prasad Poudel, coordinator of the rally organising committee, said more and more people were getting aware of the benefits of yoga. — HNS
