Agitators’ plight

KATHMANDU: Health of seven DV victims, who have been staging a fast-unto-death since April 10, is deteriorating, Ghanshyam Basyal, president of the American DV Victims’ Association (ADVVA), said on Sunday. Basyal said, “Sita Bastakoti and Tej Bahadur Rawal are unconscious. Most of the other members are unable to move on their own.” He said that the day ended without any significant response from the American Embassy and the government. “We have talked to the Foreign Secretary, who assured to talk to the Minister of Foreign Affairs on Monday. — HNS

Student’s feat

KATHMANDU: Shrochis Karki, son of Ganesu and Kalpana Karki of Teenpaini, Morang, has been enlisted on the Merit List at Kenyon College of the United States of America for the first semester of the 2006-2007 academic year, a press release issued by the college said. “To be eligible for Merit List Recognition, a student must earn a grade-point average of at least 3.45 on the College’s 4-point grading scale,” the press release added. A graduate of Budhanilkantha Schoo, Karki is a sophomore majoring in international studies and political science at Kenyon, a private liberal-arts college in central Ohio, the release added. — HNS

HURPES meets

Kathmandu: The Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES) organised separate meetings in Dailekh on April 11 and Nepalgunj on April 13. A press release issued here on Sunday quoted Krishna Pahadi, the founder president of the HURPES, as saying constituent assembly polls may not be held till the monarchy exists. The release requested all not to lose patience and build a new Nepal. — HNS

Lalitpur: Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) on Sunday felicitated people injured during agitations organised by Janajatis. Those felicitated included Rajendra Gurung, Khagendra Makhim and Ang Dendi Sherpa. — HNS
