Buddha Jayanti plans

Kathmandu: The 2549th Buddha Jayanti Celebration Committee has announced that it would organise programmes to mark the occasion for a week. This year the Buddha Jayanti, also called the Baishakh Purnima, falls on May 23. Convener of the Publicity Sub Committee Vikchhu Sangharakshit said a week-long celebration will begin from Tuesday with airing of Buddha’s teachings through TV and radio channels. Inter-school quiz contest, nationwide preachings, health camps, poetry seminar, peace march and other programmes will mark the occasion. —HNS

Looters arrested

Kathmandu: Police on Sunday evening arrested three persons, Prem Bahadur Tamang of Kavre, Padam Shrestha, 24, and Binod Puri, 24, of Sindhupalchowk, when they were looting a house owned by Bishnu Chalise at Kapan-1, Kathmandu. Police, however, said three accomplices managed to escape. In another case, crime investigation branch of the Valley Police on Saturday arrested six persons on charges of looting ten houses in different places in Kathmandu. — HNS
