Indigenous groups announce fresh protest

KATHMANDU: Several indigenous groups today jointly declared a month-long protest programme to pressure the government for the immediate implementation of agreements reached earlier between the respective groups and the government. Tharuhat Struggle Committee, Tharuhat Welfare Assembly, Muslim National Struggle Committee, Tamsaling Autonomous Council and Limbhuwan State Council, issuing a joint press statement in the capital, announced the protest programme stating that the state was plotting a conspiracy to wipe out their identity. The month-long protest programme includes sit-in programmes in front of government offices, protest rallies and a two-day bandh.

They have demanded proportional representation of indigenous people in state organs and autonomous provinces with right to self-determination. They also demanded the government to control the skyrocketing prices, improvement in the security situation and solution to famine seen in the several parts of the nation.
