Int'l community praises Nepal's efforts for new statute, reminds leadership of past commitments

KATHMANDU: Praising the current progress in the constitution drafting process and efforts made by the political parties for to prepare the preliminary draft of new constitution, the international community in Nepal reminded the political leadership of their past commitments to fundamental human rights, gender equality and inclusiveness.

"The political parties have an opportunity to build momentum through a public consultation process that gives all Nepal’s citizens a full opportunity to express their views and to build common ownership of the draft constitution," issuing a statement on Friday, a day after holding a meeting of the representatives of various diplomatic missions, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Jamie McGoldrick, said on behalf of the international community in Nepal.

The international community trusts that the political leaders honour their commitments to fundamental human rights, gender equality and inclusiveness in the constitution in line with the international laws, to which Nepal is a signatory, he added.

The accomplishment of a democratic and inclusive constitution, providing for the interests, equity and rights of women and men from all sections of Nepali society would build on the positive achievements of past agreements, the statement further read.

"With this fundamental and guiding document, the political leadership have a historic opportunity to inspire a peaceful, united, inclusive and democratic future of Nepal."

Ambassadors of donor countries under the name of International Development Partners Group (IDPG) meet every month at the UN country office in Lalitpur to coordinate the development support to Nepal.

Ambassadors, head of missions and representatives of Kathmandu-based foreign missions, including those of India, China, Germany,the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, France and the European Union, were invited for the meeting.
