Janjatis to stage demo today
Kathmandu, April 15:
The Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN), the Association of Nepalese Indigenous Journalists (ANIJ) and a number of other indigenous organisations are organising a demonstration for the restoration of democracy at Anamnagar tomorrow.
“We have been taking part in the ongoing people’s movement because we believe the indigenous people of Nepal will not be empowered unless inclusive democracy is established
in the country,” said Dr Om Gurung, general secretary of the NEFIN.
“Tomorrow’s demonstration is a part of our movement,” he said, appealing to all the indigenous nationalities to take part in the ongoing nationwide movement. Condemning police atrocities against the participants at a peaceful rally organised by journalists, the ANIJ called for an end to suppression and sought the release of all those who have been arrested during pro-democracy demonstrations. The ANIJ also urged the government to make arrangements for the treatment of the journalists injured during the police action.
Meanwhile, issuing a statement, the Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples’ Concern Centre condemned indiscriminate arrests and police action against demonstrators.
