Khyati murder accused face public wrath

KATHMANDU: Tension ran high on the premises of District Court, Kathmandu, at Babarmahal for a while today after relatives and friends of Khyati Shrestha, along with the public at large, suddenly pounced on Biren Shrestha (Pradhan) — the prime accused in Khyati Shrestha's murder — and his accomplice Merina Shakya. Metropolitan Police Range, Hanumandhoka, had taken the duo to produce them before the court to seek judicial remand for another seven days.

Enraged relatives, Khyati's classmates and local residents had gathered in and around the court premises from early this morning once they came to know that they would be produced in court.

"No sooner had we reached the court, more than six persons pounced on the accused," said a police inspector, requesting anonymity. "Some people dragged Merina by her hair, while some repeatedly punched Biren." The police were compelled to use force to bring the situation under control.
