KMC, Maoists seal deal on disposal of garbage

KATHMANDU:Garbage disposal at Aletar landfill site resumed

today following a breakthrough in dialogue between the government and a group of people led by a UCPN-Maoist cadre Bhavana Karki.

“We’ve reached an agreement with the aggrieved party. The garbage disposal will continue unfettered from today,” said Rabin Man Shrestha, chief at the Environment Management Department, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).

The garbage disposal was disrupted several times in the past by the group belonging to Chatre Deurali Village Development Committee-6 in Dhading, demanding jobs and skills-oriented training, among others, to local residents.

The Karki-led group had submitted their charter of demands to the government authority some three weeks ago.

Sources at the KMC told The Himalayan Times that some trucks en route to the Aletar landfill site, failed to dump the garbage there today morning. Yesterday, eight trucks loaded with the garbage produced in the valley were forced to return from the site.

As per the agreement reached some 14 weeks ago, the government will carry out development works provide an ambulance, establish a health post and dole out compensation, among others.

The agreement that reached today stated that the government would address their demands as per the previous agreement, said Shrestha.

“We agreed to monitor the drinking water and power projects — a part of the deal signed earlier. And they agreed to allow us to continue our job,” he said.
