KMC plans to build more parking lots

Kathmandu, August 12

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is planning to build parking lots at Tundikhel, Lainchaur, Tinkune and Dharmapath in a bid to reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

“Construction of the parking lots will begin within three years,” said Spokesperson at KMC Gyanendra Karki. “We have to finalise the design and get the government’s permission before starting the project,” he added.

Without appropriate parking areas, people in the city often park their vehicles haphazardly on the streets, aggravating traffic congestion While designs for parking areas to be built at Lainchaur, Tundikhel, and Tinkune have already been developed, the one for Dharmapath is in the process of development.

“As the land in Dharmapath area is owned by KMC, construction of the parking lot would help KMC generate revenue,” said Karki.

A budget of Rs 3 billion has been allocated for the construction of an underground parking lot at Lainchaur, Rs 4 billion for the parking lot at Tundikhel , and Rs 1 billion for the Tinkune parking lot. However, the cost estimate and design of the parking lot at Dharmapath has not been prepared.

“The number of vehicles is increasing rapidly in the city. Even though traffic police officers are handling the jams and the haphazard parking of vehicles, lack of parking areas has created a great problem,” he added.
