KATHMANDU, JANUARY 15
The Central Working Committee, led by Gagan Kumar Thapa-who was elected President by the Nepali Congress' 2nd Special General Convention (SGC)-visited the Election Commission to update official documents related to the convention and the election of the new committee.
The office bearers and central members, under President Thapa's leadership, reached the Election Commission's central office in Bahadur Bhawan, where they submitted documents concerning the restructuring of the NC Central Committee in accordance with Clause 51 of the Political Party Act, 2073. The delegation also handed over documents that included decisions and proposals endorsed by the SGC, as well as details of the newly elected Central Working Committee.
Speaking to the media after the visit, Thapa confirmed that the team had completed the submission process.
Similarly, Vice President of the Thapa-led faction, Bishwo Prakash Sharma, told reporters that the Nepali Congress had not undergone a split; rather, the party had secured legitimacy through the SGC. He noted that the new Central Working Committee was elected unopposed on Wednesday, and the leadership had arrived at the Election Commission to update the official records accordingly.
Likewise, newly elected General Secretary Gururaj Ghimire informed the media that the first meeting of the Central Working Committee-held prior to the EC visit-had decided to form a parliamentary committee and an allocation board responsible for distributing tickets for the upcoming March 5 House of Representatives election. He added that a manifesto drafting committee has also been constituted under Thapa's leadership.
The newly elected committee arrived at the Election Commission accompanied by legal experts, including senior advocates Harihar Dahal, Gopal Krishna Ghimire, and Prem Bahadur Khadka.
Officiating Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari formally received the documents from President Thapa. The delegation requested an expedited update of the Nepali Congress' official status, citing the limited time available to prepare for the March 5 election.
As per the EC's election schedule, January 20 has been set as the date for filing candidacies for 165 constituencies under the first-past-the-post electoral system for the upcoming House of Representatives election.
