KMC receives 100 complaints through ‘Clean KTM’ app
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has received over 100 complaints from the public through ‘Clean KTM’ app launched in April.
With more than 500 downloads and 4.7 rating as per the record maintained by the Google playstore, Clean KTM app is helping the KMC collect garbage from various locations in the city through complaints received from android phone users.
On the basis of complaints, the KMC has been able to collect garbage from more than 100 locations in the city.
Android phone users can take picture of the garbage, mention details of the garbage type -- bio degradable, non-biodegradable and mixed -- along with the location and then post it. In addition, users can also take pictures of the litter louts and report it to the metropolis with comments.
“After receiving the complaints, the KMC had dispatched pick-up trucks to pick garbage from the locations within 24 hours,” said Rabin Man Shrestha, chief of Environment Management Division at the KMC. He, however, expressed dissatisfaction over low public participation in the campaign.
Usually garbage piling up along the roads at Tinkune, Baneshwor, Durbar Marg and Thamel were among the most common complaints. Shrestha added KMC would delegate the management of Clean KTM app to all 35 wards of the metropolis within a month.
On the other hand, android phone users are very happy to be able to assist the KMC in keeping the city clean. Shyam Maharjan, 22, of Tinkune, said, “KMC has made a very good use of technology. I hope this will encourage the public to assist KMC in keeping the city clean.”
Shrestha informed that the KMC will hold talks with Nepal Telecom to launch SMS service, wherein mobile phone users can SMS complaints regarding uncleared garbage. “The SMS system will help all mobile users, who do not have access to the Internet, lodge complaints,” said Shrestha.
Earlier, the KMC had also been receiving complaints about uncleared garbage over phone.
