Landfill site likely at Banchare Danda
Kathmandu, March 30:
The Environmental Impact Assessment carried out in Banchare Danda is in the final stage and is awaiting the nod of Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology for the construction of a landfill site there.
Bhai Raja Manandhar, senior division engineer at Environment Assessment Section at the ministry, said they had decided to incorporate additional recommendations before taking the final decision.
He said the EIA report would be submitted to Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre , Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City and Kirtipur Municipality.
“The real challenge is not only to get permission for the construction of landfill site, but to bring it into operation,” said Manandhar, adding civic
offices should ensure that mistakes committed while constructing Sisdole landfill site are not repeated.
Manandhar revealed that in the reviewed document, they had strictly prohibited dumping of the medical wastes in the site. Banchare Danda, which is spread over 40 hectares, can accommodate about 3 million cubic metres of garbage.
He said they had proposed segregation of waste at the primary source of waste collection and only the bio-degradable waste should be dumped in the site.
