Law on domestic violence lauded
KATHMANDU: Forum for Women, Law and Development (FWLD) has welcomed the Constituent Assembly's decision to pass a bill on domestic violence.
CA member Sapana Pradhan Malla said the law had ensured individuals right against mental, physical, sexual as well as economic torture inflicted at home.
She said the women had finally been successful in drafting the bill, which would enable women to live a life of dignity. Under the law, victims can lodge a complaint at a police station, National Women's Commission and local government bodies.
The act ensures treatment and compensation for the victim. Malla said promulgating regulations and setting up complaint centres, providing psychological, financial and legal help would be crucial to enact the law.
Advocate Meera Dhungana said passing of the bill had been a milestone in ensuring women's right.
Binda Hada, secretary at Ministry of Women Children and Social Welfare, said an in-house discussion on preparing the regulations had been over. The ministry has asked for Rs 190 million for carrying out related activities.
