Major parties, UDMF talk 1st time after Constitution amendment

KATHMANDU: Major parties on Monday held a meeting with the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front for the first time after the first amendment to the Constitution.

Top leaders of three major parties - Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and UCPN-Maoist - were present at the meeting.

The talks between the Front and the government as well as ruling parties could not be held after the Parliament endorsed the first amendment to the Constitution on January 23. The Front has been accusing the government and major parties of "unilaterally imposing" the amendment as the Constitution was imposed on September 20.

Only on Sunday, the alliance of ruling parties, the High Level Political Coordination Committee, had decided to continue talks with the protesting parties in a bid to seek a peaceful solution to the ongoing unrest.
