Make principals, teachers accountable, say guardians

Kathmandu, August 25

Guardians have demanded that the government make school principals and teachers accountable for ensuring quality education in community schools.

Putting forth their 11-point demand, they said the government should ensure that students from community schools secure at least ‘B’ in exams.

Suprabhat Bhandari, president of Guardians Association of Nepal, today said quality of education in community schools were below par and blamed this on poor management.

“The government should also ensure that schools have appropriate physical infrastructure and capable teachers,” he said.

GAN has long been demanding that children of community school teachers, government employees and political leaders be sent to community schools.

Stating that the Private School Fee Fixation Standard Directives-2016 was endorsed in the presence of all concerned stakeholders, Bhandari said it was sad that the major stakeholders refused to follow it later.

The Central Fee Fixation and Monitoring Committee has formed a task force to hold talks with the stakeholders to revise the directives.

“We want the government to ensure implementation of the directives by incorporating recommendations offered by the task force,” he added.

Two guardians’ associations  GAN led by Bhandari and Nepal National Guardians Association led by Dharma Dutta Devkota  had yesterday submitted 11-point demand to Prime Minister Puspha Kamal Dahal.

They have also demanded that Baishakh 15 be celebrated as Guardians Day. They have demanded implementation of the agreement to include representatives from among guardians in the district, village and city education committees.

The guardians have sought formation of a High-Level Education Commission within six months and a national debate to offer recommendations to the commission on formulation of a new education act.

Other demands include filling the vacant positions of secretary at the Ministry of Education, director general at the Ministry of Education and member secretary in the University Grants Commission.
