Maoist-affiliated workers continue stir in Kantipur

Kathmandu, October 3:

The Maoist-affiliated workers today continued to demonstrate in front of the Kantipur Publications office in Shantinagar.

They demanded that the Publications resolve the crisis by reinstating 12 dismissed workers immediately and release those who have been detained, a Kantipur staffer said.

The 12 workers who have been dismissed by the Kantipur Publications have warned they would be compelled to “go to any extent” if they are not reinstated and those workers detained by the police are not released immediately.

In a statement issued today, the workers said: “We will be compelled to go to any extent and the Kantipur Publications management would be responsible for the consequences.”

Meanwhile, the Carter Centre today said that the attack and continuing threats made on Kantipur print and television media by a Maoist-affiliated trade union is an “incursion on press freedom, a principle explicitly agreed to by the Maoists in the Comprehensive Peace pact and the interim constitution.”

In a release today from Atlanta, the Centre said Maoists’ actions do not instill faith in the Nepali people and called into question their dedication to peace. “The Maoist leadership has an obligation to publicly condemn and stop this activity,” it added.
