Ministry committed to develop libraries: Minister Yadav

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Chitra Lekha Yadav, today said that her Ministry was committed towards the development of libraries in the country.

Addressing a programme organised here by Eighth Library Day Main Ceremony Committee, she also called on the new generation to develop the reading habit.

Recalling that she spent a lot of her time in the library, Minister Yadav said it was compulsion then to visit the library in a period each day during the school time.

"We had to present a report in the class as to what we learnt in the library and this responsibility helped me to develop a reading habit later," she added.

Similarly, Secretary at the Ministry and Chairman of the Committee, Bishwo Prakash Pandit, said that library buildings damaged by the earthquake would be reconstructed through the National Reconstruction Authority.

Former Education Minister Ganesh Shah maintained that despite having a huge sum of money allocated for the development of education sector, development of libraries was overshadowed.

It has been estimated that there are a total of around 1,200 public libraries across the country.
