MPCD launches war against cyber crime
KATHMANDU: Hackers are everywhere. In recent days, they have even gotten into personal email IDs, and ministries’ web portals.
The Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD), Hanumandhoka, has urged on all to promptly call the police if they suspect hackers intruding into their personal email IDs.
In its war against cyber crime or what is sometimes referred to as ‘clever fix’, MPCD has set up a separate Computer and Information Technology (CIT) Cell. Internet users are asked to email the complaints at ecrime@nepalpolice.gov.np if there are such attempts by hackers.
SSP Rana Bahadur Chand, in-charge, MPCD informed that CIT Cell would look into the case and track down the alleged hackers. “Since it is an organised crime, MPCD has mobilised 15 security personnel under the command of a police inspector,” explained SSP Chand.
Cyber crime is coming in various forms, abduction threats or ransom, intrusion into one’s bank account, email IDs and misrepresenting one’s photographs and personal identifications and feeding them to social networks like Facebook.
SSP Chand has appealed to all not to keep the information to oneself but to inform the police and cooperate with them to bring the hackers into justice. The MPCD has recently been equipped with Cyber Forensic Lab to probe into the incidences of cyber crime, he added.
Recently the police have received a flurry of complaints about cyber crime but have not made any arrests in this connection. Once booked, the accused will undergo a trial under Electronic Transaction Act- 2063 BS.
A couple of days ago, MPCD had organised an awareness programme to let the people know about the crime during the ECAN Fair. They are also setting up display flex boards and banners raising awareness in public places.
