Municipal executive election begins in Kathmandu Valley

KATHMANDU: The process to elect municipal executives has begun in the municipalities of Kathmandu Valley.

A CPN-UML team won the election held for eight-member municipal executive in Shankharapur municipality on Wednesday. The UML received 25 votes against 20 secured by the alliance of Nepali Congress, CPN Maoist Centre and Rastriya Prajatantra Party, informed Municipal Election Officer Bhuwaneswor Poudel.

Earlier, municipal executive members were elected from among the women members elected as municipal members. The elected are Gyanu Shrestha, Sunita Ghalan, Buddhimaya Tamang, Gyan Kumari Pokharel and Uma Devi Karki.

Likewise, Ananda Sarki, Bhakta Bahadur Kami and Anil Pariyar were elected under Dalit or minority category. There is the provision that the Chief, Deputy Chief and Ward Chairpersons are the ex-officio members of the municipal executive.

For election in Dakshinkali municipality on Thursday, the registration of candidacy was carried out today, said Election Officer, Pratima Pokharel.

NC and UMl have registered nomination for four members each as both the parties have equal number of 23 members in the municipality, according to the Office of Municipal Election.

The municipal executive election is set for June 2 at Nagarjun municipality, June 3 at both Gokarneswor and Tarakeswor municipality and June 5 at Kirtipur and Kageswori Manohara, Budhanilakantha, Chandragiri and Tokha municipality.
