NHRC urges government to correctly address water induced disasters

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission has urged the government to correctly address water induced disasters and the resultant humanitarian crisis in the country.

Issuing a press statement on Thursday, the constitutional watchdog said that its attention has been drawn towards problems caused by landslides and  inundation as a result of the incessant rainfall in different parts of the country.

People have been displaced, crops have been destroyed and the dams built to control the floods have been ravaged, the statement reads, the consequences of these are the imminent humanitarian crisis as the victims have been living a miserable life owing to lack of shelter, food and health services.

In accordance to the rights to life, shelter, food and health as guaranteed by the Constitution in addition to the the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights adopted by the United Nations, the Commission draws the attention of the government to ensure that people are provided the opportunity to live a dignified life by controlling the epidemic and averting disasters, according to the statement.

The Commission has also called for the detailed study on the effect dams and roads constructed on the southern border are having in Nepali areas, international standards on dam construction and the technical aspects so as to address these problems .
