'Government may enforce partial lockdown in Covid-19 Hotspots if cases keep increasing '

KATHMANDU, APRIL 25

Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali has said that the government is not contemplating nationwide lockdown at the moment.

Addressing media persons gathered at Baluwatar on Sunday, Minister Gyawali, who is also the spokesperson of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (UML), said that lockdown is not the ultimate option for solving the issues pertaining to coronavirus pandemic which is rapidly spreading in the country.

"Lockdown only breaks the chain for a while and pushes the inevitable little further, it is not the solution," minister Gyawali said after attending a meeting of the general convention organising committee. "For now we urge the citizens to rigorously follow necessary health protocols," he added.

The government does not want to adversely affect the economy that is just about recovering from the earlier lockdowns, and daily lives of the people by enforcing another lockdown, he said.

However, if coronavirus cases keep on increasing, the government can enforce partial lockdown in Covid-19 Hotspots, Gayawali claimed.
