NBA seeks probe into bribery allegations

Kathmandu, September 3

The Nepal Bar Association today issued a press statement expressing concern about the bribery allegation against some   Supreme Court justices and a lawyer.

The Judicial Council on Monday had decided to probe the decisions allegedly made by some judges in favour of medical colleges by accepting bribes.

The Centre for Investigative Journalism, Nepal had carried out a sting operation and published the transcript of the conversation between its reporter, and the chief administrator of the Universal Medical College, Bhairahawa, Dhruba Paudel.

In the conversation, Paudel apparently takes names of two sitting justices Gopal Parajuli and Cholendra Shamsher Rana and also mentions the Supreme Court’s registrar as well as a judge of the Patan Appellate Court as the key persons, who the medical mafia has been influencing to win cases.

Paudel went on to claim that even former chief justice Damodar Prasad Sharma accepted Rs 20 million to issue a verdict in favour of medical college(s).

NBA has urged the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Judicial Council to conduct a fair and independent investigation into the allegations.
