NCP Standing Committee assents to withdraw Constitutional Council amendment ordinance

KATHMANDU: Standing committee meeting of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) concluded this evening with the decision to withdraw the Constitutional Council amendment ordinance.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari, on Tuesday, had promulgated the ordinance to amend the existing Constitutional Council (Functions, Duties, Powers and Procedures), on recommendation of the Council of Ministers.

After PM Oli's assent to rescind the ordinance in today's standing committee meeting, NCP lawmakers also agreed to retract the demand for special session of the federal parliament. Earlier this afternoon, some NCP lawmakers had gone to the President’s Office in Shital Niwas with the signatures of multiple lawmakers demanding a special session.

NCP Spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha, responding to media after the meeting stated, "Today's meeting, based on consensus, has decided to withdraw the Constitutional Council amendment ordinance passed by the government as well as revoke the demand put forth by party lawmakers for a special session of the parliament."

He further informed that next meeting of the standing committee will be held on Sunday, December 20 and that the party's central committee meeting, earlier scheduled for December 20, has been shifted to Friday, December 25.

Today's meeting was conducted at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar amid the ongoing internal rift within the party.
