KATHMANDU, APRIL 21

The Nepal Police have urged journalists to exercise restraint when reporting on cases under investigation.

During an interaction with journalists organized by the Nepal Police's Department of Crime Investigation today, the Nepal Police emphasized the need for caution among journalists when covering ongoing investigations.

Chief of the Department and Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Tek Bahadur Tamang, expressed concerns that news stories based solely on hints and suspicions could create illusions and confusion among readers.

He urged media personnel to pay special attention when disseminating such news, emphasizing that the Nepal Police regularly provides information on issues of public concern.

Similarly, Mahendra Raj Singh, the monitoring chief at Press Council Nepal, informed that the NPC had been developing a code of conduct in accordance with the Press Council Act-2048 BS and monitoring media and journalists' compliance with it. He added that the council takes action against media outlets violating the code of conduct.

Sharada Chalise, an officer at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, stated that the ministry is working to ensure the dissemination of factual and credible news.

She mentioned that the ministry routinely organizes press meetings to inform the general public about decisions made during Cabinet meetings.

However, journalists participating in the interaction expressed the view that there should not be a tendency to withhold information in public offices, as it would violate the general public's right to information.
