Curfew imposed after protesters storm Parliament; police fire rubber bullets and tear gas

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 8

The Nepali Army has been deployed in New Baneshwor after the situation intensified during the Gen Z protest against corruption and the government's social media ban. The army was mobilized following the imposition of a curfew in the area.

The decision came after protesters broke into restricted zones and entered the Federal Parliament premises, prompting authorities to issue a curfew order. Security forces had earlier fired tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and even aerial shots to disperse the crowd, but demonstrators continued to clash with police.

The curfew order, effective from 12:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., covers Baneshwor Chowk to Bijuli Bazaar bridge (west), Tinkune Chowk (east), Ratna Rajya School (north), and Shankhamul bridge (south).

Authorities described the situation in Baneshwor as "highly tense," noting that protesters had pelted stones at police and climbed into Parliament premises before being cleared out.

The protests, led by Gen Z youths were initially declared peaceful but escalated once barricades were breached. Demonstrations have also spread to Biratnagar, Butwal, Chitwan, Pokhara, and other cities, where youths voiced anger over corruption and the nationwide social media shutdown.
