Nepali Congress proposes four-point road map for way out
KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress, the largest party in the Legislature-Parliament, has come up with a four-point proposal in its bid to seek a way out to the current political deadlock in the country.
The party has proposed to announce the date for local polls immediately, endorse the election-related bills, resume the House proceedings and give a full shape to the Election Commission (EC) turn by turn. It hoped that the road map would help parties find a ground to break the existing political deadlock.
A meeting of the Parliamentary Party's office-bearers and Central Working Committee members available in the Capital held this morning presided over by party President Sher Bahadur Deuba at the PP office Singha Durbar decided to further intensify talks with the ruling partners and the oppositions to forge an agreement on the proposal.
However, the meeting has not mentioned the ground for holding the local elections that whether if wants to hold the polls in the existing structure or only after local body restructuring in line with the 2015 Constitution.
The main opposition CPN-UML, which has been obstructing the House since the registration of the Constitution amendment proposal on November 29, has been saying that it was ready to let the House resume the business if political parties became committed to endorsing the local poll-related bill.
On the other hand, three election-related bills are awaiting approvals at the Parliament while posts of three commissioners at the Electon Commissions are vacant.
"A delay in opening the House business will prolong transition," NC General Secretary Shashanka Koirala said after the meeting.
Similarly, party senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel spoke of the need of taking the country towards election phase to find a way out to the existing political imbroglio.
