Nepali students in US raise fund for quake victims

Kathmandu, September 9

Nepali students at the University of Virginia in the United States have delivered donation to the United Nations World Food Programme in Nepal to support the quake victims.

A press statement issued here today by WFP said finance and mathematics graduates, Diwas Neupane and nine other Nepali students, raised a total of Rs 85,000 for the quake victims.

It said the money will be used by WFP to provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake. “We all felt so helpless in the face of the suffering and the devastation brought by the earthquake,” Neupane said in the statement, adding, “Organizing a fundraiser and candlelight vigil on campus was our modest way of helping those in need.”

As per the statement, members of the group were impressed by WFP’s disaster preparedness in Nepal, as demonstrated by the humanitarian works carried out by the organization after the disaster.

It further said the relief dispatch hub played a key role in distributing relief items to those in need.

According to the statement, within six weeks of the earthquake, WFP provided more than two million people with emergency food relief. Currently, WFP is supporting over one million people through food and cash assistance. WFP also delivers humanitarian cargo such as shelter materials, food and medicines on behalf of 140 humanitarian agencies to the earthquake-affected communities of Nepal.
