KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 17

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to facilitate the performance of final rites, in accordance with the religions, cultures, and traditions of Nepalis killed in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, by repatriating their bodies home.

Furthermore, the NHRC has called upon the government to take effective measures, using diplomatic channels, to repatriate Nepalis affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and ensure proper treatment for the injured individuals.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel emphasized the need for the Nepalese government to provide relief, compensation, and ensure the safety of the families of the deceased and injured. Additionally, measures to prevent Nepali citizens from undertaking illegal routes for foreign employment in the future were requested.

The NHRC highlighted receiving information from various sources regarding the recruitment of hundreds of Nepalis into the military services of Russia and Ukraine. Tragically, some Nepalis lost their lives due to attacks by Ukrainian forces, while others sustained injuries.

Emphasizing the government's responsibility to safeguard the human rights of Nepalis globally, the NHRC stressed the need for rescue operations and protection wherever Nepalis are located.
