KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 1
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued an appeal to everyone to respect the rights of senior citizens.
It emphasizes that those who misbehave with senior citizens must face appropriate consequences, while also highlighting the importance of younger generations learning from the knowledge, skills, and experiences of their elders.
The NHRC points out that the 33rd International Day of Older Persons is being observed worldwide under the theme, 'Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons: Across Generations.'
On this occasion, the NHRC calls upon the government and state mechanisms to provide comprehensive facilities and services to older people. It urges the authorities to prioritize older individuals in service delivery and pay close attention to their health and well-being.
In a press statement issued today, NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokhrel emphasizes the need for increased seriousness and proactive efforts from all three tiers of government, political parties, non-government organizations, and all other stakeholders regarding the rights and care of senior citizens.
The statement expresses concern about growing incidents involving the transfer of property from senior citizens to others through deception or without their knowledge, as well as the indifference shown towards the care and services required by senior citizens, including cases of abandonment in senior citizens' homes.
The NHRC urges everyone to ensure that elderly individuals receive proper services as part of their social security, including health insurance, discounts on healthcare expenses, and transportation fares, and to prioritize their needs in service delivery.
