KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 19

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the government to ensure adequate investment and robust legislative measures to safeguard the rights and welfare of migrant workers.

In a statement issued on International Migrants Day, the Commission emphasized the urgent need to address labor migration challenges through enabling policies and effective legislation.

"The Commission urges the government and all relevant stakeholders to promote safe, regular, and orderly migration while protecting the rights of female domestic workers employed abroad," stated NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel.

The NHRC also called on stakeholders to actively contribute to ensuring safe and orderly migration practices. Despite the substantial contributions of migrant workers to socioeconomic development, the Commission expressed concern over the inadequacies in labor management systems and pressed for comprehensive reforms.

The Commission has been committed to protecting and promoting migrant workers' rights through various initiatives, including monitoring human rights compliance, conducting research, addressing complaints, and establishing bilateral agreements with human rights organizations in labor destination countries.

According to the United Nations, there are approximately 281 million international migrants worldwide, constituting 3.6% of the global population.

International Migrants Day, observed annually on December 18, highlights the invaluable contributions of migrant workers worldwide and draws attention to the challenges they face. This year's theme, "Honoring the Contributions of Migrants and Respecting Their Rights," underscores the importance of recognizing their efforts while advocating for their rights and dignity.
