No end in sight to garbage row

Kathmandu, January 12:

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has not been able to collect garbage for the last few days. And the worst part is that there is no solution in sight to the problem and the city is likely to stink for a few more days.

The garbage collection was affected after a clash between locals of two villages of Nuwakot and Dhading, at the border of which the landfill site is located. The collection was also hit after the locals of Chhatredeurali VDC in Dhading announced to block trucks carrying garbage to enter the landfill site unless the government meets their 16-point demand.

“The locals of Dhading had demanded the Ministry of Local Development to meet their demands by January 5,” said Deepak Ratna Kansakar, site manager at Sisdol Sanitary Landfill Site.

Before the ministry could address their demands, locals of the two villages clashed on January 6.

He added unless there were peace between the two villages, the KMC would not be able to take the garbage to Sisdol. He said KMC would collect the garbage as soon as the KMC workers feel secure.

Locals of Chhatradaurali VDC of Dhading have demanded that one person from each

household be provided with employment and other development and construction works be

carried out in their village for allowing to dump the garbage in the landfill site.
