KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 20

The government has urged everyone not to panic about the new variant of coronavirus identified in India.

Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, stated that there is no need to panic regarding the new variant of coronavirus found in the Kerala state of neighboring India. He reassured that there is no reason to worry, as the infection observed in India is related to the respiratory system.

"Problems related to the respiratory system are currently increasing in India and China. ICU, oxygen plants, and other physical infrastructures constructed during the COVID-19 pandemic can be utilized if needed," he shared.

Budhathoki mentioned that although a new variant of the coronavirus has been detected, there are no new symptoms associated with it. He added that the symptoms related to respiratory problems are seen in the new variant.

Health desks established at checkpoints and international airports have been placed on standby, and a request has been made to place patients with respiratory problems under special supervision, he added. The spokesperson also informed that patients with long-standing respiratory problems have been recommended for gene sequencing.

The World Health Organization has confirmed the presence of the new variant of COVID-19 in the Kerala State of India.
