Deputy Guv Neelam Dhungana made the acting Governor

KATHMANDU, APRIL 8

The Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Maha Prasad Adhikari has been suspended.

Adhikari was automatically suspended after the government decided to form an investigation committee to probe various allegations leveled against the Governor, including leaking of information to media regarding the Finance Ministry's recent decision on prohibition of luxury goods import.

The Cabinet meeting on Thursday decided to go ahead with the inquiry, the details of which were only recently known. A three member panel will now undertake the investigation into the allegations. According to sources, Adhikari has been handed the letter apprising him of the government's decision.

It is being alleged that Governor Adhikari is facing the charges due to his existing differences with Finance Minister Janardan Sharma in recent times. Minister Sharma had made a statement against 'some high level NRB officials' this morning, at an event held in the capital.

Meanwhile, with Adhikari's suspension, his deputy Neelam Dhungana will officiate as the acting Governor of the NRB.

Adhikari was appointed the governor of the Central Bank by the erstwhile Oli government in April of 2020, prior to which he served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Investment Board Nepal.
