KATHMANDU, MAY 4
The Unity Convention of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) began in Kathmandu on Saturday. The three-day event was inaugurated by Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana Deuba in the presence of global NRNA representatives.
While the faction led by Badri KC boycotted the convention, citing questions over its legitimacy, Minister Deuba asserted that the event, organized under the leadership of Dr Shesh Ghale, was officially recognized as per the Supreme Court's directive.
"We can recognize only one official NRNA. That's what the Supreme Court has clearly stated," said Minister Deuba, urging all stakeholders to join the unification process.
Deuba highlighted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Law have aligned their stance with the court ruling. She called on dissenting members to set aside political differences, unify under one platform, and help strengthen the NRNA's role in supporting Nepal's development.
Former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of using diaspora capital and expertise to support Nepal's progress. He acknowledged concerns over legal complexities faced by NRNs in investing in Nepal and urged the government to simplify regulations.
Former Deputy Prime Minister and Janata Samajwadi Party leader Ashok Rai described the unity convention as an ideal opportunity to give the NRNA a renewed direction. He stressed the need to tap into the skills of Nepalis living abroad to benefit the country.
Chairing the session, High-Level Committee Coordinator Dr Shesh Ghale, said the convention must serve as a turning point to make NRNA more relevant to the next generation. "Times have changed, and unless we bring youth into leadership, the purpose of the organization will fade," he said.
Ghale also noted that the election process-scheduled for Sunday-is being conducted transparently and in line with democratic norms. The convention concludes on Monday.
NRNA activists including Devman Hirachan, RK Sharma, Keshav Paudel, Mahesh Shrestha, Rabina Thapa, Kul Acharya, Binod Kunwar, and Janaki Gurung echoed the call for unity, saying the convention was a necessary step forward in line with the court's order.
