NRNs feel for orphans, chip in for their studies
KATHMANDU: Friends of Nepal, New Jersey (FONNJ), recently organised a special Nepal Day function for Grade VI students of Readington Middle School. The programme aimed to make the American young minds aware about Nepal’s socio-cultural events and their peers in the Himalayan nation.
Dr Tulsi Maharjan, founder, Nepal Orphan Project, and ex-president, FONNJ, said that many in the US did not have much idea about his motherland.
“But the children got excited once they came to know that their little help would go a long way to send a kid to school for a year,” said Dr Maharjan. It costs around $50 annually for a child to get educated here. FONNJ and Rotary Club, Branchburg, have ensured that 200 children could attend school in Patan.
Rotary Club, Patan, has tied up with its Branchburg counterpart and FONNJ to realise these underprivileged children’s dreams. The scholarship scheme was started by NRNs in New Jersey 15 years ago.
