KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 6

The Nepal Students Union (NSU), a sister organisation of the Nepali Congress, the largest party in the federal parliament, is working to steer the student movement in the right direction.

Today, during an interaction with mediaprsons in Kathmandu, NSU president Dujang Sherpa stated, "This is the time we turn the student movement in Nepal in a positive direction."

According to him, a negative narrative about NSU was prevalent in the past. "But we have been emphasising 80 percent educational and social issues and only 20 per cent political agenda," he added.

"In 20 per cent we stand always in opposition to our own political affiliations and oppose irregularities within the party and leadership."

He further said, "We do not interfere in university professors' work and committees. We are just working on rectifying and refraining them from wrongdoing, which has resulted in a positive way. We have also stopped locking the educational institutions."

Meanwhile, Surak Sejuwal, spokesperson of NSU, emphasised that they recently helped students recover Rs 7.1 million, which was irregularly collected from the students in the name of fees.

"NSU protested after learning that various private educational institutes were collecting money irregularly from the students," he said.

"This is illegal and against Nepal's education act, and we followed it and retrieved money in accordance with that."

He also stated, "We are working to eliminate big brother culture from politics and NSU. In addition, it is time to separate NSU and make it independent of our sister party."
