KATHMANDU: The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Nepal today expressed grave concerns over the government’s inability to take prompt action against senior army officials involved in human rights violations.

The UN’s reactions follow the promotion of Major General Toran Jung Bahadur Singh, former commander of the 10th Brigade and the direct chain-of-command over army units at Maharajgunj. Singh has been held as the main culprit for the human rights violation that took place in 2003 and 2004.

Forwarding a letter to the Prime Minister, Madhav Kumar Nepal, OHCHR representative to Nepal, Richard Bennett, has expressed deep concerns over the promotion.

Bennett expressed frustrations over the inaction of the government on its request communicated on July 26. Bennett had then requested the government to take action against perpetrators of arbitrary detention, torture and disappearance at the NA’s Maharajgunj barracks in 2003 and 2004.

“No action has been taken yet despite

the fact that these

human rights violations were documented by OHCHR in two public reports,” he said.
