Over 1.58 million punished for drunk driving in five years
KATHMANDU: The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has so far taken action on more than 1.58 million people for drunk driving in the past five years.
The division had launched the anti-drunk driving campaign in Kathmandu Valley on December 7, 2012 in a bid to reduce road accidents resulting from driving under the influence of alcohol.
A total of 383 drivers were suspended in this period. If any driver is booked for drunk driving for the sixth time, his/her license is suspended.
According to Division Chief Sarbendra Khanal, drunk driving is one of the reasons behind increasing number of accidents in the congested Kathmandu Valley roads. As per the provisions, a violator shall be fined Rs 1,000 and given an orientation class on road safety every time (until the fifth time).
