KATHMANDU, APRIL 26

Human rights activist Bishnumaya Pariyar was awarded the Badri Pahari Social Service Award last Saturday in Kathmandu.

The Human Rights and Peace Society presented the 'Karmayogi Badri Pahari Social Service Award' for the year 2080 to Pariyar for her special contribution to human rights and social justice.

On behalf of the society, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal Sushila Karki handed over the award to Pariyar during a special program organized by the Human Rights and Peace Society. The prize carries a purse of Rs. 11,00,00.

Pariyar, a Nepali-American activist for social justice, has been honored at national and international levels for her contribution to the rights movement for more than two and a half decades. She has been a guest speaker at various universities and institutions, advocating for human rights and social justice, the society said.

Upon receiving the prize, Pariyar, born in Gorkha on December 19, 1973, expressed its special significance to her. With an advanced degree from Clark University in the United States, her journey is marked by notable achievements. Notably, she features in the school curriculum of Massachusetts, USA, particularly in the seventh-grade curriculum of government schools. Likewise, the story of her life struggle is included in a book published by a world famous publishing house.

Beyond advocacy, Pariyar is the founder president of Association for Dalit Women's Advancement of Nepal (Adwan), an organization active in the field of rights.

Additionally, acknowledging her work, Pine Manor College honoured Pariyar with the Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) in 2013. Currently residing in New Jersey, USA, Pariyar has published two works.

The award is named in honor of the human rights activist Krishna Pahadi's father.
