Parliament postponed until tomorrow

KATHMANDU: The House meeting scheduled for Thursday has been postponed till  10:00 am on Friday, according to Parliament Secretariat General Secretary Manohar Prasad Bhattarai.

The meeting of the Legislature- Parliament has been called off by Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar following the conflicting urges of parliamentarians regarding the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki, which had been registered at the Parliament Secretariat on April 30.

The lawmakers from the main opposition CPN-UML demanded that the impeachment motion be recalled.

However, two largest ruling parties seemed adamant on the impeachment motion brought against Karki, who happens to be the first CJ in Nepal to face the accusation.

According to CPN-UML Vice-Chairman Bamdev Gautam,  the meeting of the House could not proceed as the opposition was against the impeachment motion but the ruling parties were stubborn to withdraw.

Despite knowing the fact that the impeachment motion would not be upheld, said the UML Parliamentary Party's deputy leader Subash Nembang, the ruling coalition brought the motion against CJ Karki so that she would be barred from carrying out her duties until she retires next month. CJ Karki had been automatically suspended after the filing of the motion at the Parliament Secretariat.

Nembang further added that the filing of impeachment motion against Karki was a stigma on Parliament.
