Parliamentary panel decries act of Malaysian firm

Kathmandu, February 22

The International Relations and Labour Committee under the Legislature-Parliament has condemned the act of government bodies, citing that they did not take any initiative to control the fraudulent acts by the Malaysian company known as VLN against Nepali migrant workers.

The Committee meeting held today also decided to hold further consultations with officials of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and Office of the Attorney General regarding the steps for taking action against the company.

The meeting condemned the officials’ reluctance to take action against the company as the Committee on December 22, 2014 had issued directives to the Home Ministry, Industry Ministry, Foreign Affairs Ministry and Office of the Company Registrar to take action against VLN.

The Committee concluded that no initiative was taken to control the unscrupulous act of charging Rs 3,900 each from aspirant migrant workers wanting to go to Malaysia. The committee said that the company has been collecting as much as Rs 1 billion every year.

The committee had also urged the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority to carry out necessary investigation and issue directive to the company to stop its work, saying the company did not implement the directive of the committee issued a year ago.

Committee President Prabhu Sah said that further directives would be issued in the name of VLN by holding consultations with officials of the Law Ministry and Office of the Attorney General.
