KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 13

The Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee under the House of Representatives has directed the government to enrich the National Human Rights Commission with resources so that it can perform effectively.

A meeting of the committee today issued this directive to the government, according to Committee President Bimala Subedi.

In the meeting, Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dhanraj Gurung pledged cooperation to revise the National Human Rights CommissionAct, 2012.

NHRC Chairman Top Bahadur Magar said the Commission was effortful to make the three-tier government responsible against caste-based discrimination.

Commission member Lily Thapa stressed that the committee should make significant intervention in gender policies so as to further promote the rights of gender and sexual minorities.

Commission Acting Secretary Murari Prasad Kharel said, "The environmental justice and digital rights and their promotion are also human rights concerns."

In the meeting, lawmaker Santosh Pariyar of Rastriya Swatantra Party accused the NHRC of trying to sweep its shortcomings under the rug.

He said it was saddening that the Commission failed to prioritise serious issues of justice such as Nirmala Panta's case.

Another lawmaker of the party Sobita Gautam alleged the Commission was falsely reporting to secure the GANHRI 'A' status. Likewise, Jeevan Pariyar of Nepali Congress said the rights of Dalit community were not in the NHRC's priority.
