Parliamentary committee inspects TRC, CIEDP

KATHMANDU: The Social Justice and Human Rights Committee of Legislature-Parliament on Friday had an onsite inspection of the transitional justice mechanisms--the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons.

The commissions were formed to investigate into the conflict-era crimes.

A team led by the Committee President Sushil Kumar Shrestha directed the commissions to submit their reports within the stipulated timeframe.

However, the officials from both the commissions complained that they were short of resources for the full-fledged functioning.

TRC Member Manchala Jha informed the team about the activities carried out by TRC so far.

Meanwhile, CIEDP Spokesperson Bishnu Pathak stated that the CIEDP was preparing to accomplish its duty despite the lack of resources and necessary laws.

The TRC and the CIEDP were formed 22 months back. They, however, had to stay idle for a year due to lack of laws and regulations. Their term is ending after three months.
